After nineteen years, the initiative now appears to be reaching its conclusion.

The fourteenth and final official negotiating round took place in October 2025, and the negotiations were formally concluded on 27 January 2026 in New Delhi. According to the European Commission’s assessment, the agreement undoubtedly represents the most significant mutual opening of markets between the parties to date. The agreement package goes well beyond the issue of tariffs: it brings together various technological, energy, and mobility-related elements, while also carrying a clear geopolitical message for all market participants in the current international environment. By reinforcing the shared commitment to economic openness and rules-based trade, the agreement is expected to strengthen economic and political ties between the European Union and India at a time of growing geopolitical tensions and global economic challenges.

The European Union and India already trade goods and services worth more than EUR 180 billion annually, supporting approximately 800,000 jobs within the European Union. By 2032, the free trade agreement is expected to double EU exports of goods to India, primarily by eliminating or reducing tariffs covering 96.6% of EU goods exports to India. Overall, the tariff reductions could generate annual savings of approximately EUR 4 billion in duties imposed on European products.

This ambitious trade liberalization will provide a significant competitive advantage for key European industrial and agri-food sectors, granting companies operating in these industries privileged access to the world’s most populous country and to one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, with an annual GDP of approximately EUR 3.4 trillion.

Opportunities for European Businesses

Under the free trade agreement, India will grant tariff reductions to the European Union that no other trading partner has previously received. Tariffs on automobiles are expected to decrease gradually from 110% to 10%, while duties on automotive parts will be fully eliminated within five to ten years. Tariffs of up to 44% on machinery, 22% on chemicals, and 11% on pharmaceuticals will also largely be abolished.

The agreement contains a dedicated chapter addressing how European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can best benefit from the new export opportunities created by the agreement. In this context, both parties will establish dedicated contact points tasked with providing micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises with relevant information about the free trade agreement and assisting them with practical issues that may arise in the course of its implementation.

SMEs will particularly benefit from the tariff reductions, the removal of regulatory barriers, and the enhanced transparency, stability, and predictability provided by the agreement. In addition, both contracting parties are committed to strengthening sustainability commitments, which is reflected in the inclusion of a dedicated chapter on Trade and Sustainable Development.

Following the conclusion of the negotiations, the agreement will be subject to approval by the representatives of the EU Member States in the Council of the European Union, followed by the European Parliament. The final step will be the ratification of the agreement by India, bringing into force what is often referred to as “the agreement of agreements.”

Forrás:

EU and India conclude landmark Free Trade Agreement

The European Union began negotiations with India on a free trade agreement in 2007.
